Walking around Ciudad Colón, people can meet many runners and bikers on the road. It looks like these sports are an important part of people’s daily lives. By conducting interviews I found out that triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in Ciudad Colón and that’s why there are many runners and bikers. A triathlon includes swimming, cycling and running. Even though Triathlon is known as one of the most challenging races, people in Ciudad Colón are falling in love with this sport.
In Ciudad Colón, there is a specialized group called ‘Athlos Multisport’. This club was established in 2011 for people to exercise together and prepare for various triathlon competitions. Once joining, members can get advice from the veteran about physical training and tips for competitions. This team has a diverse range of people of all ages, but most of them are in their 20’s or 30’s. Currently this club has 50 members. On every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm and Saturday at 6am, people meet for running. On Wednesday night, people get together to practice cycling.
I went to tsuch a runners' meeting. After a few minutes, people were gathering by twos and threes and soon the joggers were filling the street. They started warming up with some stretches. Of the 30 people gathered, some 70% were women.
“I just enjoy myself running for fun. It is also good to burn calories”, a lady told me during her warm-ups. After the coach briefly expained the route, people started to run slowly along the road. The coach stayed and helped newbies to stretch their body before running.
According to José, all participants are local people and most of them are living in Ciudad Colón. It is open to everyone regardless of their age or gender. “For the upcoming triathlon competition, around 10 people will participate in ‘la Herradura’ beach”, José said. The Triathlon competition is an annual game for athletes from Costa Rica. The venue of this year is located on the central pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Participants start the race with running, followed by cycling and swimming at the beach.
“I have worked in gym over 10 years, teaching people at Santa Ana and Escazu. Three years ago, I was asked to lead the group. I was born and raised in CiudadColón. I know almost people here, so I decided to coach the group”, said José. He uses a Facebook page as a means of advertising. As a result, more than 700 people have joined the Facebook page (Atletismo Triatlón) by now.
There are many people who got a good record at the competition in the group. “I have won the triathlon competition twice”, one of members, Franklin, said. Since Triathlon requires strong physical strength and skills, he regularly exercises. “I am working at the computer company until 4 pm. After work, I run for one and a half hours with my members on two days a week. Every Tuesday and Thursday night, I go to the swimming pool. Basically I exercise every day.”
